RNG abuse is a series of techniques that allow you to manipulate the game's internal random number generator in order to obtain the perfect Pokémon. I'm starting to think my best bet is to actually start over and do the cute charm setup again, but this time make careful note of the Calibrated Delay I had to use, and use that as a starting point for any further attempts. They're like millions off.Īm I doing something stupid? Or is it likely that the calibrated delay is just so far off that the seeds I'm hitting are way out of the range of my spreadsheet? I tried using the searcher tool to narrow down the seeds I might've hit using the fairly broad ranges of IVs the calculator can give me at lvl 5, but even within a +/-3000 delay range, I've yet to see a seed anywhere Near the one I was aiming for. I know when I did my cute charm setup, I ended up having to increase the Calibrated Delay to around 620, but I stupidly didn't write it down and it got cleared. But so far, I havent been able to make any adjustments because the pokemon I keep getting don't fall within these 100 seeds I've tablulated. (I couldn't find any way in Pokefinder to do this step any easier). I know at low level without access to the roamers or pokegear it's difficult to check which seed I actually hit, so what I did was search every seed +/-50 from my target, and copy the spreads and natures into a spreadsheet. Pressing A on the machine should generate the starters, on frames 0, 4, & 8, 1, 5 & 9, and if I hit the timers correctly, Totodile should be shiny. If what I've learned is correct, there's no random frame advances in the lab, so I should load into my game at frame 0.

Load the save at the expiry of the second timer.

  • Get through the menus until the next A press will load my saved game, and wait for the second part of the timer.
  • Start the game at the expiry of the first timer. Quickly back out of the menu and reboot, then hover ready to start the game.
  • Start Eon Timer at the same time I confirm the date and time change.
  • Set my 3DS date and time to the date and time from Pokefinder, minus X minutes because Eon Timer says X minutes before target.
  • Calibrated Delay at 490, Calibrated Second at 14.
  • The 3 second difference when doing a TID manip is not needed for starter manip.
  • Put the delay into Eon Timer, along with the target second.
  • Converted that seed to a time, to get a date/time and delay.
  • I had been searching for 9, so I was never going to get it! frame 9 (going for Totodile)
  • I found a seed that has an acceptable shiny spread on frame 8(9?) - using PokeFinder and setting minimum and maximum advances to 8, which I guess is technically the 9th frame.
  • I know my TID and SID (I also did the cute charm glitch setup).

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or if I've misunderstood a key step :(

I've been attempting to manip for a shiny Totodile on my newly acquired copy of Soul Silver (last game I needed to complete my full set of games, hooray!), but not having much luck. I've gone through the steps I was following and adjusted them to the ones that actually worked, with what I learned with help from the comments and some eye opening emulator memory watching, I hope it helps someone else get a new shiny starter!
